Edinburgh: Inspiring Capital
With an historic old town dating mostly from the 1500s, and an elegant Georgian new town that was built in just a few decades more than two hundred years ago, Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital and one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. The setting is spectacular with views of distant hills and a blue sliver of sea, shining across the nearby Firth of Forth. It’s also a place where you can go clubbing in a 500-year-old building; ride a bike over cobbled streets, or go shopping or see a movie in gleaming modern structures of glass and steel.
With far fewer than half a million people, Edinburgh is a very compact capital, its prosperous economy based largely on banking and financial services, the creative industries, brewing and tourism. It hosts the Scottish Parliament in a controversial, ultra modern building, while the mediaeval castle dominates a truly stunning skyline. There are wide green open spaces, a huge - and climbable - rocky crag in the heart of the city, the shoreline and the colourful port of Leith close by.
As well as all manner of historic sights and sightseeing, the city also houses stylish shops, cosmopolitan restaurants, famous pubs, cafés and bars. It has world class galleries, cutting edge art, many theatres, a great dance and music scene, rock venues and clubs, as well as the year-round buzz you get from the city that stages the Edinburgh International Festivals – Arts, Film, Book, Science, Children’s and the Fringe - and the most well known New Year street party on earth.
Edinburgh is unique. The entire city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and with just about every sport you can think of, along with championship golf courses, hills, woods, farmlands, coastal trails and beaches in the surrounding countryside, it’s perhaps not surprising if the city has several times been voted the best place to live in the UK. It’s beautiful, accessible and a brilliant place to study.
Edinburgh is home to Aspect College, Basil Paterson, EAC, ECS Scotland, Edinburgh School of English, Fettes Centre for Language and Culture, The Hamilton School of English, IALS - University of Edinburgh, Randolph School of English, Regent Edinburgh, Stevenson College Edinburgh and Edinburgh’s Telford College.
